The Day BEFORE School Starts

Um......so it's Sunday night and I'm seeing a lot of FB posts about 'trial runs' for the morning to get ready for the REAL first day of school.

Huh.  Yeah.....I don't get that.  I mean, what's the point?  (And if you are one of the people who posted, please don't be mad....I really just don't get it).  Why would you do that to yourself or your kids?

Let me see if I've got this right.  The kids are forced to spend their last day of summer getting up at ungodly hour which also means MOM has to get up at an even more ungodly hour to do the 'drill.'  You'll dress them in nice clothing and feed them breakfast and time them as they walk out the door to see if they can make it to the bus stop on time. (Note to self....look up bus pick up time BEFORE first day of school).  In my world that means wasting a totally good school outfit that is now dirty, making them a breakfast when they have spent the whole summer foraging for their meals, and mostly, it means being awake really really early.  Not to mention that since I gave birth to mini worriers, we can then worry about all the things that could possibly go wrong on the first day of school based on the drill experience which means falling asleep Monday night will be twice as hard even though the kids will have been up before the sun.

I fully support fire drills, tornado drills, and although they scare the crap out of me,' hiding from the bad man' drills they do at the school.  However, I am not a supporter of 'first day of school drills.'

The Watson Family will most likely sleep till 10am.  We might be dressed by noon, but only because I didn't get to the grocery store today.  We will hold on to the last day of summer with our claws out clinging to every last minute of golden sun and freedom we possibly can before we are dragged into Tuesday and reality.

And guess what.....we will still make it to the bus stop on Tuesday on time (assuming I remember to look it up before then) and we'll be dressed and fed and ready to go; one day later than a lot of kids out there.  Yes, the Watson's get one more day of summer cause that's just how we roll.
